May the covers be with you

May 31, 2007

To mark Star Wars’ 30th anniversary (and no doubt sell a good few copies and make lots of money – cynic? Moi?), Empire magazine have run their July issue with a whopping choice of 30 covers. Thirty! Featuring most characters from Wicket to Mace Windu (see what I did there?), Star Wars fans can choose their fave or collect all 30. Gulp.

There’s a special subscribers issue featuring the Power Four (Luke, Leia, Chewy and Han) but for dedicated collectors there are ten issues with Jar Jar on the front. Anyone finding a Jar Jar copy wins something truly fantastic from Lucasfilm (I’m thinking a prop from the film? It’s got to be better than just a frame right?)

Now this strikes me as a bit weird. Firstly, surely no fan boy in their right mind would *want* to buy a Jar Jar cover. Most would actually feel quite dirty picking it off the shelf and brinbging it to the counter, so it strikes me as quite mirthsome that it’s that cover that will reward the fan the most. It’ll be quite a conflict of interest for any proper Wars fan, I can tell ya.

Also, a winge. It’s a tad unfair that you don’t have to necessarily be a fan of the films to win this fantasic prize. Anyone can just strole into WH Smiths and nab a Jar Jar cover (and then sell it on eBay for muchos moolah no doubt). No skill needed there (except hands, arms and feet and maybe slight commercial mindedness. Shame.

My personal fave covers: Wicket (always had a soft spot for the furry little tike – sorry, vicious killing-with-rocks machine); Leia (*that’s* going to be a big seller. Oh yes!); Obi Wan’s is a seminal character and his cover is utterly collectable; and Vader (they could have got a better pic, but for a magazine cover, it’s very striking). But most of the covers are ‘I-want-them-all’ type things, except the recent prequel lot. They just look a bit tacky next to Boba Fett’s creepy, battered helmet and the Stormtrooper’s menacing stance…

Is this the right place to say I’ve never seen a Star Wars film?
